TeamStutterheim / Anderson Landscape Architecture

Stutterheim / Anderson, in conjunction with Frankston City Council and the Heart Foundation, have been awarded a Planning Institute of Australia award in the 'social and community planning section' for this 'Space for Active Play'. A small neighbourhood green space, Carrum Woods Reserve has been developed as a children’s playspace through an extensive workshop and consultation process with children from the local school. The children, an examplary client, requested a highly experiential space identified by a number of key elements: messy spaces, places to hide and seek, lots of trees, places of experience and risk; stipulating avoidance of standard off-the-shelf play equipment as a specific desire. The landscape is developing as a highly topographic and thickly planted 'wild space'. These are spaces that resonate with our need for dreaming and which allow users the freedom to do nothing in particular. as well as provide a robust arena for biking, unstructured play and other physically challenging activities which encourage realisation of one's own physical limits, awareness of physical forces, and development of conflict resolution, leadership and embrace of coopertive ventures.
