TeamStutterheim / Anderson Landscape Architecture with Cassandra Complex

Cassandra Fahey’s much acclaimed design for the Great Smith Aussie House was undergoing conception as an amalgam of her favourite architectures, so it seemed appropriate to package the tiny site as a gift box.

To accommodate three levels within the height restrictions of building code, the lower floor needed to be suppressed below ground level, which required steep paths, similar in slope to the nearby Black Rock cliff walks, a move which then also drew in the stony landscape. The cricket bat fence and wicket handrails reflected the client’s passion for sport, as did the Thorpy-watery stained glass window.

As with the entire design, the landscape outcome belies the extent of ingenuity required to keep the subsurface entry dry, the rainwater saved and the neighbours’ houses from view. It’s called WSUD and it cost a bomb. Favourite plants from the client’s previous home were fortuitously appropriate to the circumstances and constraints of the site.
