The design for Karingal Family and Children’s Hub achieves a number of outcomes within what the community perceived as an invasion of a much loved public open space. It primarily secures the character of its mature canopy trees and lawn and its function as an existing water course by avoiding fencing and maintaining favoured desire lines as a planted swale
which can move considerable amounts of overland water west to the site’s adjacent Wingham Park. In terms of its new functions, it establishes a creative playspace through terracing a considerable slope. The car parks incorporate WSUD principles, being kerbless and directing runoff to the swales and rainwater into substantial subsurface reservoirs. plantings are native, mostly indigenous. Hardscapes offer texture and preserve the footprint of previous built forms. A central courtyard offers a peaceful place of shelter. An extensive
green wall clading two faces of the gymnasium complex helps cool the building and compensates to some degree for the loss of mature canopy trees involved with the building program.
