Edge Dynamics

Design Research Studio, RMIT University

Beyond the rhythmic patterns of season, orientation and climate that are fundamental to the design of urban landscapes, more mercurial, fluid dynamics shape the environment. This studio turns now to consider these less immediately discernable forces. We will seek evidence of the shaping of our coastal edge by the energies of tide, wind, storm and geology. Perhaps their effects are accumulative rather than rhythmic? If so, what are their design influences and potentials? We will pay close attention to a coastal site (over three days at Waratah Bay), and bring these understandings to bear on an urban landscape.

The Studio has as its starting point an understanding that awareness is enriched by the interplay of our personal accumulated imprinting, for example, from sourced/researched information; from attention to what we observe, and from lived physical experience. and how, through drawing, these become the tools of design. Students will draw on Bernard Cache’s understanding of ‘functions of actions’ and ‘reactions to a mileau’, ‘through a logic where the whole is not given but always open to variation as new things are added or new relations made.’*
