No Ideas but in Things
Upper pool design studio Programme of Landscape Architecture RMIT University
This studio aims to explore the creative potential of generative procedures to initiate spatial, formal, material, and programmatic organisations across scales. In doing so, this studio aims to question what Landscape Architecture might be and what it’s role can be in responding to matters of global urgency – global warming, peak oil, and accelerated urbanisation, to name a few. In particular this studio will ask students to engage with dynamic, systemic, emergent, and self-organisational processes. Much design research in this area is resently conducted in purely digital environments combined with direct output fabrication technologies. This studio, while open to and encouraging of computational approaches and tools, will primarily be engaging with algorithmic design through analogue or material thinking: thinking pursued in things, ideation embodied in the material, corporeal, tangible world, and in the oscillation between abstract speculation and material making.
