Seymour Lighthorse Park

A SAALA practice-based Upper pool design studio within the Landscape Architecture Program, RMIT University

Seymour Light Horse Park - increasingly hemmed in by urban development within its ring of hills; memorialised through sculptural elements and sacred ground. It In recent years, local residents with diverse interests in the Park – as memorial to its military history, as holding ground for the local ecology, as a place of relaxation - have initiated a regime of care in the Park. Does it offer this country town a focus for the energy of its youth place of ecological and social regeneration? What is ite relationship to development?

Stutterheim/Anderson are interested in design that engages with the site through an intimate understanding of its fine-grain topographical elements, historic framework, and the patterns of growth emerging from site in this design research studio.

An all-seasons crossing point for the Goulburn River, Seymour became a pastoral centre and then a ‘railway town’, and later fixed the route of the Hume Highway. Then its terrain, connectivity, location a few kilometers from the railway station, and its water supply made it ideal as a major military training ground.
